Wedding Budget

Weddings in Brunei do not come cheap. Even if one minimizes the number of events in a traditional Brunei wedding, we still have to cough up a handful of cash to pay for the preparations. Take for instance, a-all-in-one-day wedding comprising of the main crucial events, Hantaran Berian, Nikah and Bersanding and invitation for family members only could cost in the region of B$ 15,000.

In the golden ages, one did not really think twice of a wedding budget as everything was done together. Family members often chipped in to help. For instance, food was bought by the bride's parents then all the family members would come over and cooking would be done together by the ladies while the men did the setting up of seats for guests and the woodwork for the pelamin. But nowadays, we have bridal boutiques to rent pelamins from and catering services to handle the cooking. I must say, weddings aren't what they used to be. Yet, although we have all these modern services to help us, we are still a very family orientated country and it is not surprising if an auntie or uncle of the bride suddenly says they'll "Sponsor" the brides pelamin or "sponsor" the catering. So that could be easily minus-ed out of your budget list.

During my own wedding, I did the sinful act of taking out a bank loan but I did not agree to the amount the bank was intending to give me as it was too big. In the end I calculated the amount I needed to cover the costs of the Hantaran Berian gifts I was to give my future husband, my photographer, my videographer and my make-up artist as well as hairstylist. I settled with B$8000 that I would pay off within two years. My sister, on the other hand made a more smarter move, she had been saving for her wedding for over a period of one year.

Here is an estimated sample of what one has to pay for in preparation of a wedding here in Brunei for the three major events, Hantaran Berian and Nikah, Majlis Malam Berbedak and Bersanding ceremony held on different days.

The total estimated cost for a wedding like this would be around B$ 25,000 and that would be with limitations. I was lucky enough to get permission from Mr.Brunei Resources to use his Excel format of wedding costs which he posted last year. A big thank you to him for his article and excel file. Click on the link below to access the file. I hope this helps future brides and groom to get a rough sketch of a wedding budget and teaches them to save in advance instead on depending on the banks for personal loans. Good luck!
